Nominee John Roberts has background in using law to advance right wing social agenda, and wife is counsel to anti-abortion group. What’s that mean?
Posted in Category: Law-Courts

John Roberts, like almost all Federal Judges, got his nomination by being a longtime political operative within the Republican Party.

Roberts rises above the masses of political operatives, though. If the following information from MyDD is correct, Roberts was actually hired years ago by the US Solicitor General as a political lawyer for the express purpose of litigating the conservative political and social agenda in the courts.

Here’s a quote from the linked article:

This was a position created in order to further a partisan agenda, not to enhance the legal capabilities of the solicitor general. It was created to render a “traditionally independent” office less independent and more politically partisan. Is it that much of a stretch to argue that the second Bush is trying to hire Roberts in order to perform the same function on the Supreme Court?

That makes Roberts a rarefied legal-political entity.

Furthermore, Roberts was intimately involved in the 2000 Florida Recount Battle.

Finally, if you wonder about Roberts’ stand on intimate issues of reproductive freedom, maybe the following will give you some insight, but it’s actually a link about Roberts’ WIFE. I pass no particular judgment, and just offer the info for you to process.

About Jane Roberts’ Service to Women, according to FeministsForLife, an anti-abortion group - - -

Jane Sullivan Roberts currently serves as legal counsel to Feminists for Life of America (FFLA) on a pro bono basis. From 1995 to 1999 she served as Executive Vice President on the Board of Directors of FFL. Serrin Foster, President of FFL, said, “Jane is a brilliant attorney. We are very proud of her and appreciative of her service to Feminists for Life and women and children.” Ms. Roberts is married to Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts, Jr.

[. . .]

“Abortion is a reflection that our society has failed to meet the needs of women. Women deserve better than abortion,” says Serrin Foster. FFL is dedicated to systematically eliminating the root causes that drive women to abortion—primarily lack of practical resources and support—through holistic, woman-centered solutions.

As a parting comment, I’d like to say that I have found no information that would tend to make Roberts unqualified for the Supreme Court. He seems to be qualified. He’s just not the type of candidate I might choose. I’m sure he’ll be an honorable conservative justice.
