In the past week, It’s been hard to find news and opinion items that moved me to comment extensively, other than Katrina-related items.
Rather than let another day go by without an entry, I’m gonna make a few quick hits at a few lingering items. Maybe somehting will move me tomorrow, but today the following are on my mind, and here comes the RadMod Perspective, Quick Hit format:
———
- JOHN ROBERTS NOMINATION FOR CHIEF JUSTICE - Roberts is a shoe-in. His political opponents can’t develop any traction, and there’s nothing there to find apparently, except the known fact that he’s got solid politically somewhat conservative credentials. It’ll be the Roberts Court for the next 25 years. Get over it, if you don’t like Roberts. He’s qualified and will be confirmed. Bush won, after all.
- KATRINA - I’m a Meteorologist and KNOW FEMA Ignored *Official* Warnings. Ignore the politicians and spinwits who try to say we didn’t know that New Orleans was in such trouble and that’s why not enough relief was in place prior to the hurricane. Blog sites like DailyKos have reprinted National Weather Service pre-hurricane bulletins warning of flooding and levee–topping for New Orleans.
State and Federal Governments have been predicting the current New Orleans crisis for many years. SO - the professionals were NOT surprised. The politicians are just throwing out mindless excuses to try to save face, and the spinwits are going to mindlessly defend Bush and try to shift the blame to other targets. Looks like the Republicans in control of FEMA and DHS might be safe targets for everyone - red meat for the wolves.
Bottom line for me: Just prior to the hurricane, we had plenty of time to get hundreds of choppers into position at a safe distance to the West of New Orleans, ready to spring into action to pluck people from the floodwaters we knew were coming, and drop relief supplies into an area we knew would be devastated. Heads must roll.
- IRAQ - Iraq looks more and more like a tragedy for America. We’re financing it with borrowed money. The war helped cause a 40% increase in gas prices, as the USA took the pressure off of OPEC to hold down oil prices. That translated into about a 60 cent per gallon “Iraq tax” that we had been paying for a long time prior to the Katrina bump in gas prices. We can’t afford Iraq. And we aren’t getting anything of value from the Iraq debacle (like a Mideast democratic revolution) to make it all seem worthwhile. Even if some good things happen, at what friggin cost to the USA?
- PROPAGANDA - Hannity, Coulter falsely suggested Ariz. paper dropped Coulter’s column to “keep conservatives out”. Over at MediaMatters.org, they have covered a piece of propaganda that should have been too much for even the master propagandists at FoxNews.
Ann Coulter was bitching to Sean Hannity about a newspaper that dropped her column. She and Sean accused the newspaper of wanting to stifle conservative voices. They even read an excerpt from the editor of the paper announcing the dropping of Coulter.
Here’s the proof of the Fox bull: Hannity and Fox did NOT give you two facts: 1) The newspaper is conservative, and replaced Coulter with conservative Tony Snow. and 2) The editor’s statement explained (in a part NOT read by Hannity) that the paper has gotten too many complaints from conservatives about Coulter’s shrill, less than thoughtful style.
AHHH! Feels good to get back on the horse after a day off!
