The religious extremists and their allies in the Senate seem to think that if the Fillibuster Rule is done away with, then Bush will appoint judges who will make decisions based on Christian principles rather than follow his oath of judicial ethics. If that’s what they want, that’s Theocracy. Judges tend to be among the most ethical members of society, and they take their oaths seriously. About the best a judge could do, in terms of promoting theocracy, is to use his “discretion” (when allowed by the rules of procedure) in a way that pleases the Religious Right. If a judge clearly and plainly ignores the law in favor of making theocratic rulings, he will be reversed on appeal. And he might even be brought up on ethics charges and impeached. But the Big Show put on by the Religious Right and their allies is good for keeping the uneducted masses motivated to keep voting for Religious politicians.
