The anti-freedom nanny culture mentality shows itself in the US House’s passage of a ban on horse slaughtering. Just because important people feel yucky about allowing horse slaughtering, we’re gonna use government power to ban the industry. This is a tiny example of the anti-liberty mentality we’ve developed, as a society, as we’ve gotten used to looking to government to clamp down on unpopular freedoms time after time. What kind of politician would use governmental power to outlaw a harmless industry, horse slaughtering? In my opinion, such politician would be either 1 - a believer in the nanny culture, where the government is used as a tool to force us to live right, or 2 - a vote trader, casting their vote in order to please a constituency or contributor. Either way, the vote is anti-freedom. The controversy: See this Tribune article on the horse slaughtering ban that passed the US House.. Summary: The US has a few horse slaughtering plants, where unwanted horses are processed into food. The food is shipped to Europe and Japan, and to Zoos. Activists and celebrities are emotionally upset over the concept of slaughtering horses. Some legislators share such emotional upset. In order to preserve our national morality, I suppose, the legislators in the US House have voted to ban horse slaughtering. From a pro-freedom anti-oppression point of view, I bristle at the notion that the government has the power to ban a harmless industry just because of touchy feely emotional issues. In my preferred America, the government has no such authority, or at least, would not use its authority for such purposes. But the nanny culture has become too ingrained, and is loved by Repubs and Dems. Repubs embrace the nanny culture more than Dems, but both parties are at fault. The common people want government to control sex and recreational substance use. The common people get inflamed easily and want action by government to clamp down on too much personal freedom. We’ve been so acclimated to the nanny culture that we’ve forgotten what it is like to have a pro-liberty mentality in government.
