SOTU and Sheehan quick hits
Posted in Category: Politics-misc, Free Speech

The Associated Press makes a feeble quick and dirty unsatisfying attempt to fact check the President’s SOTU speech. I can’t find a more comprehensive fact check link at this time.

However, DailyKOS attacks Bush’s SOTU position that his illegal wiretaps would have prevented 911, showing that 911 could have been prevented based on existing law at the time . Some of the hijackers were apparently very open about their identities, and some of their names even appeared on FBI watch lists, and yet they were allowed to take pilot training and board planes. And their 9-10 “We’re a GO for tomorrow”-type of phone messages WERE tapped legally, but were NOT translated. So it wasn’t necessary to turn the USA into a police state to have prevented 911.

Newshounds already know that War Protester Cindy Sheehan got forcibly removed from the SOTU speech last night (just prior to the start of the speech) for wearing a T-Shirt that said “2245 Dead - How Many More?” Read Cindy Sheehan’s own account of what happened.

If you wonder whether Sheehan is unique in being detained for wearing a T-Shirt, Check out this brief mention (see Post Nbr 42 in the thread) from FreeRepublic.com about an incident during the Clinton administration — The post says “On my very first Freep, in front of the Capital, when the DC chapter did their weekend events at the Capital during impeachment, a Freeper male entered the Senate wearing an anti-Clinton T-shirt and was detained “.

It’s a debate for another time as to whether our Government should be allowed to detain or arrest people for peacefully wearing a T-Shirt that expresses a political point of view in a non-offensive manner. I would say the Government should NOT have any such awesome repressive power.
